Sergel Polunin — The Crown of the Royal Ballet

After I watched the film “Dancer”, I felt an irresistible impulse to write something about Sergel Polumin. First of all, I don’t understand why the media labeled him as a “bad boy of ballet”. I think he has a very sincere soul. In fact, all my impression about him is that he is a rare genius: so talented, so naturally brilliant.  His dance is such a joy of excitement. It’s a real loss for all of us when he chose to walk away from British Royal Ballet at the height of his success. We knew at that time, he desperately wanted to escape the rigid training and a small elite world. But he should know if it’s not because of that, how could he best master every essence of ballet skill? Although in the end, his delusion gave him freedom he wanted, but his delusion also caused his aspiring career short lived. At the same time, we lost such a gifted ballet star in our time.

Fortunately, he left us with his awe-inspiring dance performance in the film “Dancer”, in which he danced to Hozier’s song “Take Me to Church”. Sergel Polumin said in an interview that he cried 9 hours during filming that dance because that song brought out all of his emotions: struggle, rebellion, finding purpose, finding his identity. He knew it would be his last dance, so he danced with his soul, dance with his freedom.  From the fact that he has chosen that song himself, you can sense what struggle and liberation he wanted to express. What purpose and identity he searched for. In our life, don’t we all are troubled with these feeling sometimes?

Take Me to Church

Hozier

My lover’s got humor
She’s the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody’s disapproval
I should’ve worshiped her sooner
If the Heavens ever did speak
She is the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday’s getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
“We were born sick”, you heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me ‘worship in the bedroom’
The only heaven I’ll be sent to
Is when I’m alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well
Amen, Amen, Amen
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
If I’m a pagan of the good times
My lover’s the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
To drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That’s a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We’ve a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
No masters or kings when the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean
Amen, Amen, Amen
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
